Blogs relevant to Sandcurves that I frequent

  • Blog Name:  43 Folders by Merlin mann

    What is this blog about

It says on the site:  "43Folders.com is Merlin Mann’s website about finding the time and attention to do your best creative work."

I first came across the site after watching the " Inbox Zero" video, after which I deleted all my email in all my inboxes (why do I keep creating email accounts, I don't know).

Marlin is a scruffy, almost confused looking guy that talks about how to be awesome.  I can't really explain why, I just like him and the way his mind works.

  • Blog Name:  Four Hour Work Week by Tim ferriss

    What is this blog about

If you don't know about Tim Ferriss, you probably haven't spent much time online.  I don't want to work 4 hours a week, but he talks about some interesting things.

Tim says he coined the phrase "Lifestyle Design" and I guess I somewhat buy into that.  I went from doubling as a assistant lodge manager and senior guide of arguably the top lodge in Namibia, towards the end sometimes getting to work at 4 in the morning and leaving at 11 in the evening.  Now I 'work' for myself, freelance, make some websites, help my wife with her business, but spend most of my time blogging and working on my own websites.  So, I guess I'm, in my own small way, one of the people who buys into Tim's stuff a little.

I like some of the content of his blog, and visit often.

The most significant thing that I got from Tim was a reference to someone else's writing - "1,000 True Fans" on kk.org.  It certainly is a useful idea.

  • Blog Name:  Think Traffic by Corbett barr

    What is this blog about

The Think Traffic About:  "Think Traffic will help you discover where to spend your time to get a huge return on your efforts. Read and apply the tips and strategies you find here, and you’ll start attracting traffic, building fans and becoming successful online."

Despite tackling such a well trodden niche, Think Traffic has a very nice approach.  He emphasizes the importance of relationships over fancy SEO tricks.  It's not about quick tips to get you to the top in a SERP.

I haven't been reading it long, but already buy into a lot of what he is saying.  Let's see if it works for me here on Sandcurves.

  • Blog Name:  Problogger by Darren rowse

    What is this blog about

Well, I don't need to tell you about Problogger - it is one of the big ones.  But, for me the best stuff at Problogger is way back when Darren himself wrote most of the material himself.

You can do something like this:  Visit http://www.problogger.net/archives/2005/ and start searching through that stuff.  You'll get a good sense of what made Problogger what it is today.

Problogger has been around since the end of 2004 - there is a stack of good stuff in there.  I don't subscribe, but often search Google like this:  site:problogger.net writing tips

  • Blog Name:  Copyblogger by Brian clark

    What is this blog about

Like Problogger, Copyblogger is one of the big ones.

What I especially like are the resources in the left sidebar.

  • Blog Name:  Blogging Bookshelf by Tristan

    What is this blog about

I only came across this blog the other day, and it is still new, but I'm inspired by the way Tristan is pushing his blog.  I'm sure it is going to be a biggy.

I like books, and he's into climbing which I think is cool, so I'll certainly be reading more of what he writes.

  • Blog Name:  A List Apart

    What is this blog about

One of the big ones, with a focus on developers and web designers.  I've learned a lot from A List Apart over the years.

Like many of the well established blogs, the good stuff tends to be a bit further back.

  • Blog Name:  Onecoolsitebloggingtips by Timethief

What is this blog about:  I got to know Timethief as one of the people who was very active on Blogcatalog, where I had participated a great deal. Lately I don't find it as enjoyable to spend time on Blogcatalog, but I still keep up with Onecoolsitebloggingtips. The site has a very strong orientation towards Wordpress bloggers, with some tips that are different to the run of the mill. Worth checking out if you run Wordpress and need some help. I have a big thing for early adopters - they are a prized possession, and Timethief came and helped support this site from early on.

Blogs and website that I just like

Don't ask me to add yours unless you've had a glass of wine or six with me.

  • Blog Name:  Peregrine's Bird Blog by Craig nash

    What is this blog about

Generally just detailed accounts of birding outings, always with some good bird pictures.  If you're a birder, you'll probably love it, if you're not, you probably wouldn't get what the fuss is about.

It was partly reading about Craig's trip to Namibia that got me started with having my own blog in the first place, and it is certainly the blog I've been following the longest.

Craig has supported my efforts in blogging and building websites for some time, especially when it came to birding related stuff.

  • Blog Name:  Living A Quotable Life by Beth

    What is this blog about

Beth was a school friend (in the way that everyone in your class is your friend at school).  Her blog was also one of the first that I followed, and one of the only ones that I actually read every single thing she writes.

She's mainly taking about the trials of single motherhood, and if I hadn't known her there would be no way I would ever have started reading the blog, but Beth writes so well, it really is captivating.

I aspire to writing nice stuff like that, and she motivates me.  I guess I tried to write a personal blog here at Sandcurves, but failed.  It's not that I am trying to hide who I am, just that I'm sort of boring - I don't have any life drama, I'm happy with who I am, with my life.  When the Sh... hits that fan, then perhaps I'll start writing a personal blog of great awesomeness.

  • Blog Name:  Shemimages Photo Blog by Shem compion

    What is this blog about

Shem was a guy I studied Nature Conservation with.  We both shared a serious passion for birding, and in 1997 we went and worked for six months at the University of Cape Town.  For some of that time, Shem and I were out working on vegetation research plots, staying weeks at a time out in the bush.

What amazed me then about Shem was two things:

    • He worked very hard - even out in the bushes where nobody was watching us, he worked hard.
    • Shem was a birder way, way superior to me, and I learned so much from him, it was amazing.

When Facebook showed up and we all found each other again, I had discovered that Shem had become a pro wildlife photographer.  I helped him with some of his trips to Namibia, with some contacts, advice and actually helped guide one awesome trip with him.

I soon realized that Shem was showing up all over the place - all the popular wildlife magazines, including a front cover of Africa Geographic.

Having chatted with some of the other guys, Shem was one of the guys who we would have pegged to have made the big time, and he is certainly getting there fast.  He runs amazing workshops, and has just come out with his second book.  If you take pictures of animals and you'd like to visit Africa, get in touch with Shem's company, trust me, it is amazing.

Oh, and I did the blogger template design - my way to grovel at the feet of the master.

  • Blog Name:  Observations of a nerd by Christie wilcox

    What is this blog about

    Mmmm science.  Tasty.

This is another blog I've followed for some time.  Christie has some really interesting stuff if you are interested in evolutionary biology.
