New blogs, the thrill

I have come to the point with both this blog and see-namibia.com that I can start blogging.  Because it has taken me some time… I had to go through quiet a big learning curve to get to understand Django well, I am really, really having fun starting.

I know that among programmers it has become boring for people to say they 'rolled their own blog'. But I'm not really a programmer, and I struggled to do it first with PHP (which I don't recommend) before trying Django and Python.

The big difference for me is the satisfaction.  If you use blogger, it simply takes a few minutes to start a new blog.  But if you have had to understand the whole thing, from the HTML and CSS through to the database, the logic problem of serving up the posts, and admin interface (which you get basically for free with Django...thanks guys), and how to get Apache to play along… it's great!

So, if everyone has been telling you that writing your own blog is a waste of time (Some discussion about it here [ along with programming dogs??? ]), take it from me, it is really worth it.

Mmmm… freshly rolled blog…
